 Gloria Herfurth is in her 10th year with the New Braunfels Fire Department. She worked at New Braunfels Utilities before that. Gloria's first noticed that her speech was affected. Then she noticed muscle tics. Gradually her speech was becoming noticeably more slurred. Gloria underwent a battery of tests and she was diagnosed with ALS in early December. She has also experienced some difficulty swallowing and undesired weight loss. All common symptoms of the disease. She began an experimental drug in mid January to hopefully strengthen her muscles and heart. She has considered medical retirement from the city of New Braunfels but would prefer to work part time. She has two children, Patty and Dennis, and 2 charming grandsons, Lane and Lance, with another grandSON on the way! She has been married to her husband, Glenn Herfurth, for 14 years. Much of the rest of her family not pictured, including two brothers, two sisters, and her parents have come to New Braunfels over the last few years so they could all live closer together. NBFD knows Gloria as a dedicated and hard worker, who is always meticulously organized and willing to take on any project in order to help the team. Without a cure the disease progresses to degrade muscle response, most critically, breathing. We are all devastated by her diagnosis and want to help make a difference NOW. |
